Keep the UGC on YouTube

December 8th, 2009

YouTube generation

Spidvid is a social platform to be leveraged for creating quality video content that can be monetized, allowing each production team member to be compensated. We assume that people who have been following Spidvid for the last couple months understand this concept, but wanted to dedicate a post for those who don’t.

On YouTube anyone can be a creator by posting videos directly from their webcam, or uploading them from their Flip or smartphone video cameras. The majority of this content gets a very low amount of views, interaction, and it can’t be monetized. Spidvid’s community will be well represented by the YouTube generation, but this group needs to grasp the model of connecting with others to improve their video production value, and to understand their purpose for being a member on the site. Content that tells a story accompanied with production value is the ideal content format to produce on Spidvid, and the sponsors and advertisers who want to place their messages within the content demand that as well.

In our early beginnings the payout to production teams will be $1/1,000 views starting after the first 1,000 video views. So if a video attracts 1,000,000 views it earns $999, as the math shows 999 x $1 = $999. That $999 would be shared between the production team members according to the compensation breakdown set by the project’s creator. As mentioned before we intend to make the compensation process within Spidvid more collaborative so that the team as a whole decides what the breakdown should be.

The goal for next year is to build out the distribution and monetization network and to change the payout structure from a CPM model to a revenue sharing model. Under a revenue sharing model the distributor, ad network, the production team, and Spidvid will all share whatever revenues are attracted for each video. For now we have the above compensation model in effect mainly to communicate early on that we believe that a lucrative financial model will be successful as we move forward within the new media landscape.

Sending Out Private Beta Invites Soon

December 3rd, 2009

Things are looking good as we are getting a few new invite requests from remarkable people each day who want to join our private beta community. Our goal is to hit at least 200 individuals by the week of December 14th so that we can send out a first batch of invites to everyone on the list. From then after for every 200-300 invite requests we get we will issue a new block of invites. We considered sending out new invites every day, but to us it makes more sense to build and add to the community a couple hundred individuals at a time. If it gets to the point where we are seeing 200 new invite requests/day then we will need to work extra hard to successfully scale up the community.

During the next couple weeks leading up to this momentous invite distribution event we are developing a few new features that we feel fit well into the core of Spidvid’s platform. Going forward after our video production community will heavily determine what new developments we do, how to make the usability experience as easy as possible, and how to grow this social movement across the world.

Our exclusive distribution partner for the private beta is UnleashVideo, and with that comes the need of customization. So as the sneak peak prototype image (below) shows, a major redesign/layout is well underway to accommodate video content from Spidvid’s production community. The most unique aspects are showing each team member who was part of the video production project, showing where the members are located geographically across the planet (via Google Maps), and the open ability to interact with videos through Facebook Connect and Disqus.

If you have already provided your email address to us for private beta access thanks for doing so, if not why not head over to Spidvid right now to click on the side ‘join our video production community’ button and reserve your spot as an early Spidvid adopter.

Google Wave Compliments Spidvid’s Platform

December 1st, 2009

Google Wave for Video Production

Collaboration for film producers, directors, screenwriters and other video production talents has never been as easy as it is today. With the advent of Google Wave, the new generation online collaboration tool, film production individuals can now easily share ideas, scripts, video and music clips and other items with just a few clicks, dragging and dropping.

Google Wave features and extensions help visual artists, screenwriters and writers to paint, draw and plan projects in real-time and collaborate with team members with revisions and improvements right away. We think that this collaboration tool will be really helpful for talented individuals at Spidvid for faster and much more efficient file sharing, drawing, designing and editing in real-time.

There are various bots (or robots) such as the scriptwriting bot which aids scriptwriting in faster editing of scripts. Video makers could now take advantage of easy file sharing in submitting their videos. Gone are the days when a scriptwriter has to worry about his scripts exceeding the file size limit with emails. Directors and producers can now easily share music, video clips and other necessary files for the film production and even play some games with their team while simultaneously generating and processing the video production. Making films and videos through the help of Google Wave and Spidvid as collaboration tools drives the production costs dramatically lower. Video production has never been this fun, interactive, cost-effective and all in real-time.

Spidvid’s platform continues to attract music talents, graphic designers, producers, directors, screenwriters and video creators while it’s currently in private beta testing these individuals realize that creating and sharing video ideas and scripts has never been this organized, cost-effective and interactive. It also proves that through collaboration of many talents around the world, there has never been a better time for producing quality video content.
