Joining a Startup Incubator

November 25th, 2011

Techstars, YCombinator, and a few other startup company incubators have launched since 2007. As a result, many amazing startups have been conceived, built, grown, and in some cases sold, including: SocialThing, DailyBurn, SendGrid, OnSwipe, BrightKite, EventVue, Filtrbox, IntenseDebate, Oneforty, Graphic.ly, Next Big Sound, Like.fm, Posterous, and many, many others.

Just recently, I got great news that I was accepted into the very first INcubes incubator based in Toronto. I was instantly thrilled because I knew it would be very beneficial to Spidvid, and it’s parent company (Socially Collaborative Media, Inc.) which I founded. INcubes is a 3 month program for startup entrepreneurs, with the purpose of helping to grow and get young companies that strive to change the world funded.

My goals for the program:

- Raise angel funding shortly after completing the program.

- Connect, collaborate, and hopefully partner with the entrepreneurs and startups in the program.

- Grow Toronto’s startup ecosystem as a whole.

I have graduated from a previous entrepreneurship program, so with that valuable experience I know I can get so much more out of this higher stakes program, be a leader of my class, become a mentor for future classes, and help strengthen/evangelize the program going forward.

With Spidvid 2 being built right now, INcubes starting on December 5th, and continually growing traction in our active Spidvid community, I feel like 2012 is setting up to be a huge year!

To our US subscribers, followers, fans, and especially our community members: Have a fun and entertaining Thanksgiving, and thanks for being part of our new media movement!

Big things are happening at Spidvid! Stay in the loop by getting all new Spidvid blog posts delivered to your inbox.

Spidvid On the Social Media Show

February 26th, 2011

Social Media Show

Karim Kanji is a man of many talents; including the host of the Social Media Show, and co-founder of ThirdOcean which is a social media, marketing, and community consulting startup.

Karim and his guest Karim Awad discussed companies to watch out for on the Social Media Show, and selected Spidvid as one of them. I have posted the clip where Spidvid is mentioned and explained quite well by Karim (Kanji). Enjoy, spread the word, and enjoy your weekend. Oh, and if you want to listen to the full 46 minute podcast, here’s the link to it.

And as Karim mentioned I’m now actively seeking out a tech co-founder (rock star developer/hacker) and angel investors, so if you are either or know people who fit one or the other description, then please get in touch and let’s have a chat.

New Media Vault Toronto

August 12th, 2010

New Media Vault Logo

We are always looking for good communities, shows, videos, films, and events to get behind. Damian Pelliccione is heavily involved within the new media scene, and video production world. He successfully organizes a monthly mixer event in downtown Los Angeles called New Media Vault, which brings together hundreds of like-minded individuals working in and around new media.

Damian informed me that he was coming to Toronto in August and mentioned he wanted to do a New Media Vault Toronto event, and wanted me to help him co-organize it. I was on board from that moment on and since then all of the details have been worked out for a Monday, August 23rd event in downtown Toronto. If you reside in or will be in Toronto on that date, then you should definately come out because you will meet some extraordinary people who share the same new media passion you do. And if you’re lucky you may win a door prize, discover a new yummy drink, or meet what could turn out to be your future husband or wife. This isn’t a match maker event, but roof top patios in the summer can be pretty magical at times.

If you have a new media event that we should get behind then please let us know about it on Twitter, Facebook, or in the comments below.
