A lot of money is flowing into online video companies these days, mainly for advertising, distribution, and some new media studios are getting spun off from the larger Hollywood studios. The important area that’s being overlooked is the production model as for the most part it remains relatively closed, but thankfully collaboration is playing a larger and larger role for every production team.
Production has long taken place via closed studio silos, which has succeeded because studios had the assets, money to attract professional talent, and distribution partnerships to make the model work. But now as every day goes by quality video content is getting cheaper to create, distribution is available for free all over the web, and so the last part of the equation is money. We are seeing more and more creators raising money for their web series and short film projects through websites like KickStarter, and using Spidvid’s platform you can partner up with other like-minded talent to create the video entertainment you envision. Studios like to control the production model, and keep 100% of the content ownership, but this model is starting to be disrupted as the landscape is evolving towards openness, collaboration, and new forms of partnerships.
Are you a male or female actor based out of Southern California? Then you may be interested in James Yim’s upcoming short film project Heartbreak Heaven. A total of three actors are needed for this project, and no experience is necessary but it would certainly be a plus if you have some. The story centers around 3 different timelines of a couple struggling with their relationship. It’s all about joy, love, and heartbreak in this short film.
The script is 80% complete, and the 5-7 day shoot is set for later this month (June), or early next month (July). There is no pay offered as this is a non-profit film created specifically for the Web.
This project sounds very exciting for young actors looking to build their working portfolios, and to gain some valuable experience along the way. If you have some free time on your hands, and are seeking out new opportunities, then this film project could be an ideal fit for you.
One of our goals is to always be promoting the projects and content that our community creates. Today we look at one of our youngest but remarkably, most talented members Mattson Tomlin of New York who has created several short and feature films in his promising young career.
His current short film project “Early Retirement” should be successfully completed in the next month or so. You can get a sneak peak at the first 5 minutes of the film below in its semi-rough form, while seeing the great potential the entertainment piece has. I for one find it very interesting to see early versions of projects in progress to see first hand how post production improves content quality.
Expect to see the full film soon on our partner’s video sharing site, and we intend to also feature the film on our homepage to show what our community is capable of creating. Keep up the hard work Mattson, and continue to follow your dreams as a filmmaker.
