Spidvid Crowdfunding

December 1st, 2010

We have donated to many filmmaker’s and entrepreneur’s fundraising projects on IndieGoGo and KickStarter. It makes us feel really good to help fund new ideas, scripts, projects, and most importantly remarkable people making remarkable things happen.

Spidvid is based on the simple concept of people helping people to create new video entertainment. We looked at IndieGoGo and really liked the community of people they have who generously donate to projects of all kinds including web series, short films, new technologies, food, gaming, art, and other interesting endeavors.

I’ve known about crowdfunding for a couple years now, but didn’t really consider applying the model to help Spidvid’s community grow, and invest into new video entertainment development until recently. This is about connecting with good people who want to see Spidvid thrive and turn into something special.

If you want to show your support for evolving the Web’s open and collaborative video production ecosystem then please visit our funding page. If you donate we have some pretty interesting rewards you can earn, including a Spidvid advisor opportunity. If you can’t personally donate then please share our IndieGoGo project link with your friends, colleagues, followers, and fans. Thanks for investing into the future of open and collaborative video production.

Studios and Venture Capitalists

October 23rd, 2010

A few short years ago an entrepreneur couldn’t build and scale a successful tech or media company without raising millions of dollars in venture capital funding. The same can be said about a video creator or filmmaker where they couldn’t create a hit show or film without the resources that a corporate studio provided. Fast forward to 2010 where we are seeing many startup companies and films succeeding without the support of big corporate money. I don’t know what you think about all this, but to me it’s truly refreshing to see new possibilities and opportunities, and to watch as the business and media industries rapidly change like never before. Look no further than Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook as I believe that he’s the poster boy for the new generation of business visionaries, innovators, and leaders.

Our vision is to grow Spidvid into the web’s open video production ecosystem where individuals share and aggregate their talent and resources together so new video entertainment can be created. Studios are still needed for the most part to develop and promote feature films, but many top web series and short videos/films of the future will be the result of collaborative teams that crowdsource their funding, and leverage new marketing tools at their disposal for free.

I thought up this connection between studios and venture capitalists the other day when I was working out, and couldn’t resist writing a post about it. I’m both an optimist and evangelist when it comes to new media and business, and it’s very exciting because we’ve never seen the world transform so drastically so fast like we are today. This post is a bit random, but I hope it provided some good food for thought.

Your Previous Video Production Projects

February 9th, 2010

Up until this point our focus has been on getting creators and professionals to collaborate on new video production projects via Spidvid, but that really limits the potential of our platform for previously produced videos.

Today I think it’s important to communicate to all of the creators and producers out there that Spidvid can be used for projects worked on and completed weeks, months, or even years ago. We are working on adding a feature so private projects can be posted to our site where they don’t show up on our projects page, and so team members can be added without a bidding process needing to take place. This should be really useful for previous projects, but regardless these type of projects can still be done right now using our platform.

At this point you may be asking yourself what the benefits are for doing this.

#1. Exposure is everything – videos are begging to find audiences all over the social web, so get more content exposure and on a video sharing site custom built for you and your production team.

#2. Build your personal brand – most video sharing sites allow individuals to build up a video network, but few also provide the ability to develop a reputation to solidify an individual’s overall profile.

#3. Credit all production team members – video and film content is traditionally only delivered on sites which credit the creator or studio using the infamous “By:creator or studio name“. To us that just doesn’t seem fair since each individual should be given more credit than they currently get, and so Spidvid ensures that each team member gets the proper credit they deserve.

#4. Earn cash – if content can be monetized with pre-roll and overlay ads, then everyone earns and shares in those earned revenues as set by the creator. It’s challenging to make lots of money through the online, mobile, and broadband video platforms but this space is still very young. As advertising and sponsorship dollars shift from the TV medium to these newer outlets it will provide opportunities such as the luxury to produce videos for a living. Some creators do this full time already, and many more will be able to in the not too distant future as more dollars go up for grabs.

These are four main benefits that our platform offers your previous production projects, and entertaining video content. If these benefits are appealing enough and worthy of your time, quickly grab a free account and bring back the original magic that you invested into your previous video and short film endeavors.
