Creating An Entertaining Video Is Only Half the Battle

July 15th, 2010

So you’ve created an entertaining video or short film with your team, and are now ready to tell its story to the world’s viewing audience, fantastic. Many individuals who create video content aren’t the best promoters and marketers of it, so I’ve composed a list of tips for what should be done after a video project is complete.

1. Video metadata – You are likely going to want to upload your video or film to the web for distribution, and possibly monetization also. How many viewers find videos online is by searching for them so a video’s title, description, and tags have to be of quality. The title must grab a viewer’s attention and make him or her go “wtf?” I have to watch this right now! The description is important because lots of information can be written which can turn up in search results. Using lots of broad and narrow tags is good since lots of viewers discover relevant content using this piece of the metadata.

2. Distribution – When you want to deliver your videos online there are many options to choose from. YouTube is the first video sharing site that will come to mind, but competition for viewer attention is pretty intense there. To get mass distribution quickly, many video creators are now turning to TubeMogul which allows for uploading to multiple sites simultaneously. To release video or short film content as a team, you can turn to our platform as a solution for accomplishing that goal.

3. Marketing – Social media is becoming the go to way to promote online videos. You should be constantly growing your profiles on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, within the blogosphere, and especially in the video sharing communities you distribute in. Advertising can be spent to attract more views, and it’s a good thing to experiment, just be sure to pay attention to the campaign analytics and statistics to see if it makes sense to buy similar ads for your next video. Some bloggers who embed video content drive huge view counts for creators, so be sure to connect with bloggers in your niche to see if they are interested in showing the video to their audience.

4. Comments - If someone spends the time to leave a comment on your video you should thank them and respond to them if appropriate. Normally less than 1% of viewers write a comment, so be sure to treasure the ones who do because they are your fans who may talk about you or your video. Word of mouth and word of mouse viewers are the ultimate marketing vehicles for your video content.

If you aren’t into promoting and marketing  your entertaining video content, you may want to partner up with an individual or two who’s talented in this important area. Our community has individuals who can increase your video’s view count, so you can focus on what you do best which is create or produce videos.

2 Billion Views Per Day

May 17th, 2010

YouTube turns 5

For some of us who have been entrenched in online video for the last few years it seems like the medium has been around forever. But online video is still very new both from a production and consumption perspective.

Today the online video gorilla that is YouTube recently turned 5 years old, and now delivers 2 billion views/day. It seems like not too long ago it was “just” 1 billion views/day. In fact it was just 7 months ago (October 2009), so YouTube’s traffic has pretty much doubled in less than a year which is incredible! If this growth trend continues we may see YouTube deliver 10 billion views/day as early as 2012.

Marketing efforts to attract new members for our community haven’t typically included recruiting entertainment creators from the YouTube community. If YouTube itself is a gorilla then their video content and creators are the jungle, and it’s a jungle we need to explore because it’s evident that many creators want to produce quality entertainment but need additional outside talent to collaborate and work with. So Spidvid’s community and platform provides an excellent solution for accomplishing that goal.

Congratulations to YouTube for reaching 2 billion views/day, and also a thank you to parent company Google who covers the massive bandwidth costs associated with delivering those views.

When do you think YouTube will reach 3 billion views/day? Perhaps we should have a contest here where the closest guess gets a gift of editing software, or perhaps enrollment into an online video production course.

A Desire to Create Video Blogs

March 21st, 2010

So I’ve been thinking for awhile about how much I love writing text posts here and hearing back from the readers of Spidvid’s community, but feel I can do more to connect on a more personal level. Over the past months (and in some cases years) I’ve enjoyed watching video bloggers do their thing because it almost seems like the person is looking right at me, and the impact feels much greater than from any text I can possibly read.

If you haven’t really seen a video blog (vlog) before, or if you are looking for some new content to add to your blog reader, my favorites are listed below.

The initial plan for the Spidvid vlog is to start out fairly basic (like Chris has done above) creating one video blog per week beginning next week, and hopefully even more over time as I get comfortable with the creation process. I will talk about the story and vision behind Spidvid, questions/feedback/ideas from the community, new projects seeking out talented team members, freshly released videos and films, platform features in development, business challenges, and pretty much anything relevant to the growth and success of Spidvid.

So I look forward to soon appearing on your computer, net book, tablet, mobile screen or wherever you want to have me appear. I will do my best to keep each video very short, roughly 90 seconds in length to respect your limited time and attention.

If you have been vlogging for awhile now and have some beginner advice or tips for me, don’t be shy to reach out on Facebook, or connect with me on Twitter.

Enjoy this post? Stay updated on all our future ones via email or through your favorite blog reader via RSS. Or if you prefer social media, follow us on Twitter, and fan us up on Facebook.
