Top Viral Videos and Production Tips From November

December 2nd, 2011

Movember

With each passing month, online videos are getting more creative, more fun to watch, and less expensive to produce which bodes well for our Spidvid community. Below are 5 remarkable viral videos and production tips from November. There are dozens of others likely just as deserving as these, so if you have a favorite please include the link in the comments below.

1. Google Chrome: Movember – I can’t add a video to this list without including one that’s Movember related. If you live in a cave under a rock, Movember is where guys grow mustaches in support of raising awareness and research money for fighting prostate cancer. I didn’t grow a mustache this year, but support these guys who did, and thank Google for creating this video. Video production takeaway: Create entertaining videos and release them during emotionally charged times of the year.

2. Catvertising – Cat videos are loved by many, many viewers online, and are often found here on my viral video lists. This video tells the story of a company that offers “catvertainment” inside of branded company videos, brilliant! Video production takeaway: Use cats, dogs, birds, or any kind of cute pet you want in a video, just be sure to tell a story that’s original.

3. Carrie Underwood’s Skin Secrets – This year Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley hooked up to host the CMA Awards, and created a short and sweet promo video for the awards. I wonder if Carrie’s beauty sponsors were on board with this campaign?! Video production takeaway: Celebrities are popular, so try to lure them into starring roles in your videos and films. You won’t likely be able to get someone on the A-list, but call up Screech Powers from Saved By the Bell and see what he’s up to.

4. Jorian Ponomareff Drifting – One of the world’s top freestyle motorcyclists shows off his moves going through a tight track, and getting distracted by a sexy female. The video has been viewed almost 3 million times since November, 11th. Jorian Ponomareff is remarkable! Video production takeaway: Shoot as many angles as you can, the more footage you have for editing the better!

5. Old Spice | Motorcycle – Another motorcycle video! No this video doesn’t have the now infamous Isaiah Mustafa in it, but it’s still pretty clever. Video production takeaway: Be original, think outside the box, and do something that most video creators don’t have the balls to pull off.

Top Viral Videos and Production Tips From October

November 3rd, 2011

Galaxy

With each passing month, online videos are getting more creative, more fun to watch, and less expensive to produce which bodes well for our Spidvid community. Below are 5 remarkable viral videos from October. There are dozens of others likely just as deserving as these, so if you have a favorite please include the link in the comments below.

1. Duck Sauce: Big Bad Wolf – This gives new credence to the expression “dick head” please watch with caution. This video now has over 1.5 million views. Video production takeaway: Make people think WTF when they see your video. They will be motivated to share the video with their friends and followers.

2. The Bug Circus Generator - Bugs powering a smartphone? Now this is cool! Video production takeaway: Doing something unexpected with the help from animation can make things seem real, and fool the audience (well some viewers at least) to think things are real.

3. Sauna - A relaxing session in the hotel sauna turns to embarrassment for one poor chap. Who’s that lurking behind the steam? Video production takeaway: If you can ever get a celebrity in your video cost effectively, then sign him or her on as an actor!

4. Introducing Siri on iPhone 4S - Siri on iPhone 4S lets you use your voice to send messages, set reminders, place phone calls, and more. This viral video has almost 5 million views since the iPhone 4S launch. Video production takeaway: A beautiful product sells, but telling its story through video is key to quickly showing people first hand why they should care and how it helps their lives. Sell benefits, not features.

5. The Galaxy Nexus - Galaxy Nexus is the next generation of Nexus devices co-developed by Samsung and Google. This video does a good job showing off the beautiful new features of Android 4.0 – the Ice Cream Sandwich platform, and the phone itself. Video production takeaway: See above, and using lots of beautiful colors and animated characters can really hold people’s attention if successfully pulled off.

Google Is Dominating Online Video

July 15th, 2010

Over night, Google became the number one online video player when they purchased YouTube on October 9th, 2006. Since then the gap has been widening between YouTube and other video sharing websites. YouTube now commands about 42% of all online video streams, and that will only grow as their ecosystem further builds itself out over time.

You know about YouTube’s success on the web, and across mobile devices, but their newest and upcoming moves are quite impressive too. Something that I’m extremely interested about is their new 4K video running at a resolution of 4096 x 3072 which is ideal for a 25 foot screen. I never thought I would ever watch a YouTube video on a large screen, and maybe I won’t any time soon unless I can connect with someone who has a killer projector with mega fast broadband access. If you have an ideal YouTube 4K viewing setup do let me know.

I’m also excited about this fall’s release of Google TV that combines cable TV, online video, and the web into one interactive interface. If you think you multi-task now, just wait until Google TV comes to your living room.

Just last month YouTube won its billion dollar copyright infringement case against Viacom which was a massive win for Google, and for online video in general. It seems like YouTube can do no wrong right now, and has all the momentum to drive the entire industry forward. Maybe I’m just an online video geek, but I’m ecstatic to see where things will be in five years from now. I can’t even imagine what ten years from now will look like, but I’m sure we will all look back at 2010 as being the very early days of online video.

If you want to make a larger imprint in online video by creating content which is more entertaining and that features higher production values, then maybe it’s time to think about collaboration. If collaborating with other like-minded individuals will benefit your future video or film projects then be sure to grab a free Spidvid profile, post a project, and start connecting with the talent you need to successfully drive your vision forward.

How Does Recent Google News Affect Online Video?

June 2nd, 2010

You don’t have to tell Google executives that online video is going to be super huge as the Web and media industries move forward. Google intelligently acquired YouTube a few years ago, and lately have been super focused on online video software, devices, and codecs.

Let’s start with Google TV. So Google TV is all about marrying the Web to your TV screen in the simplest and most effective manner. One of the biggest challenges to watching online video on your TV today is the user interface. Google TV aims to provide an easy to use interface, and will allow you to search for content much like you do on Google.com now. Until Google TV actually launches though, the features and capabilities of it are relatively unknown. I guess Google TV is where Apple’s iPad was a few months ago in that regard. Many media analysts think Google TV will be a game changer for online video, but we won’t know if that’s true or not until likely next year in 2011.

Android 2.2 (Froyo) is now available for Android based smartphones. Add Adobe Flash 10.1 on top of the new software and you have the best mobile video experience to date. It’s all about video playback, and so to enjoy optimum playback on your mobile phone you will want to look into coupling Android 2.2 and Flash 10.1 together.

Finally, the WebM video codec is an open, royalty-free, media file format designed for the Web. This codec requires minimal computational power and works great on devices such as netbooks, mobile phones, and tablets. Real-time video delivery can be utilized in the highest possible quality, and WebM is flexible to not cause video encoding issues. Some insiders even think that WebM may overtake the now extremely popular H.264 codec in a year or two from now. Open usually beats out closed over time, so this prediction doesn’t surprise me at all. That’s why our platform is built on open video production.

Google has been traditionally known as the online search king, and it may not be long before they are the clear cut winner in online video as well.
