Super Bowl Ad Lessons For Video Creators

February 9th, 2011

super bowl 2011 Dallas Texas

So ends another year of Super Bowl fun and excitement, and congrats to the Green Bay Packers for a much deserved championship in 2011. I have embedded a few of the top and worst Super Bowl TV commercials of this year, and commented to provide some lessons for video creators.

Viewers seem to like Volkswagen’s “The Force” ad the best. It now has over 21 million views, and with good reason. Video production lesson: use kids to your advantage because viewers love seeing cute kids doing adorable things.

Bridgestone’s “Carma” ad has just over 1 million views on YouTube, but it’s still a lot of fun to watch. Video production lesson: Like kids, animals are very much loved by viewers of all walks of life. Combining a friendly animal with a funny gesture is genius.

Sex sells, but that doesn’t always mean it’s liked in a video. Go Daddy are known as being big Super Bowl spenders year in and year out, and usually do a pretty good job of matching their brand with sex, but in 2011 they failed with “The Contract” ad. Watch the 30 second spot below and see if you can tell me why. Video production lesson: using pretty woman in your videos certainly doesn’t hurt, but make sure you use them effectively to tell a worthwhile story.

Super Bowl commercials have been dominated by car companies over the years, and 2011 was no different. Chrysler had a brilliant one featuring Eminem called “Imported From Detroit” which told both Detroit’s and Chrysler’s stories together. Video production lesson: tap into viewer’s emotions and tell them a powerful yet simple story that they can tell to others to in turn inspire them.

The NFL did a spectacular job of promoting the sport of football, and most importantly celebrating their fans this past weekend with their campaign. It would be interesting to hear how much they spent on getting the rights to the content they used for their “Best Fans Ever” ad. Video production lesson: use objects and people in your video that viewers recognize. Giving viewers a frame of reference will help them remember what they saw, and motivate them to share your video with their friends and family.

It seems with every passing Super Bowl, viewers are getting more and more excited about seeing the new viral ads.

Until that special time comes again in 2012, it’s now your time to shine! Create better quality video entertainment by collaborating with our talented community, be sure to get a Spidvid profile and if you need any help at all just ask!

Our Top 5 Favorite Viral Videos For September

October 1st, 2010

It seems like with each passing month it brings with it more and more interesting viral videos. We have posted our five favorite viral videos below for September. Feel free to add yours below in the comments with a video link, or hit us up on Twitter, or Facebook.

1. The 200 yard golf gong shot

These golfers are masters of ball control. Watch below as they try to hit a 9″ gong 200 yards away by skipping their balls across a lake. Incredible, even Tiger Woods himself would be impressed!

2. OK Go – White Knuckles

OK Go are perhaps the most creative band on the planet today. They have had many viral video hits over the past few months including their newest one, “White Knuckles”. A great use of dogs too, check it out below.

3. Herding Cats

Our viral video list wouldn’t be complete without a cute animal one. Ikea brought in 100 cats and released them throughout one of their stores in the UK. Watch as the cats hang out with each other, get silly and wild, and of course take cat naps.

4. Future of Screen Technology

If you think you already have too many video screens in your house, office, and in your hand you haven’t seen anything yet. Check out what could be the future of screens within our lives. This is both remarkable and scary at the same time.

5. 2 Guys 600 Pillows

This video is all backwards which is a pretty interesting concept, and fun to watch. If you are sleepy right now you may want to avoid watching this video as you may search out your own comfy pillow and need a nap. Office workers you’ve been warned!

Get Your Free Spidvid Stickers

March 10th, 2010

I’ve always been kind of obsessed with stickers. As a kid I would find and buy all kinds of stickers, and then look for interesting places to place them. Most of the time I would end up violating my parents fridge, freezer, furniture, floors, walls, lights, and even vehicles, as older stickers tend to not peel off so well years later.

In any case I thought that I would combine my obsession of stickers with my obsession of Spidvid together to create Spidvid stickers. These stickers will have a nice glossy finish, will be a size of 2″x4″, and will peel off easy and fairly clean if one needs to be removed for whatever reason.

There are three ways you can get yourself some Spidvid stickers.

#1. Tweet - send out an update on your Twitter account which includes @spidvid, and make it creative. An example could be “My life will be complete if I get some cool stickers from @spidvid.

#2. Request on Facebook – Simply go to our Facebook fan page and post a sticker request comment. An example could be “I’m a big Spidvid fan, and would love some stickers for my laptop and iPhone.

#3. Email usHead over to our contact page and shoot us an email. Say hi and that you want some stickers, and provide your mailing address so we can ship some to you.

If you use option #1 or option #2 above we will follow up with you to get your mailing address. For now we are limiting Spidvid sticker shipments to North Americans only. If you live outside of North America and desperately want some stickers, we will make a special exception if you are willing to create a video of yourself using the stickers in creative, remarkable, or unusual ways.

Our hope is that a good percentage of people who receive Spidvid stickers will upload pictures and videos of themselves, showing off how they are putting the stickers to good use. We may even offer prizes to those who showcase their passion for Spidvid via uploaded content, and as voted on by the online community.

Don’t wait, make your Spidvid sticker request right now on Twitter, Facebook, or through email.

Spidcast Debuts Next Week

October 2nd, 2009

Spidcast-01Our goal for Spidvid is to not only create the first social network focused on collaborative video production, but to also spark and be part of important conversations that relate to the core mission behind our social platform.

Next week we are launching Spidcast (Spidvid + Podcast = Spidcast) which will feature conversations on how individuals connect together to form their own production teams, new video collaboration technologies, tools and resources which can be used to improve the production process, and future prospects for this industry.

This will be a weekly show which can be streamed and listened to directly on Spidcast.com, or can be downloaded through the Apple iTunes store.

Our very first episode will feature a successful movie producer, and I will be on to share the vision for Spidvid and Spidcast. Spidcast will be hosted and produced by Michael London who has many years of experience in radio broadcasting, and most recently podcasting. We are very happy to have him join our team, and fully believe that he will do a remarkable job for Spidcast long-term.

I hope that you tune in next week to Spidcast episode #1, and find value in what you hear. If you have any show ideas, questions, or feedback we would love to hear from you. If you have an interest in being a future guest on the show then be sure to get in touch.

Cheers to Spidcast, and to new beginnings.
