5 Remarkable Viral Videos From November

December 4th, 2010

I know it’s hard to believe (sarcasm), but there were a ton of amazing new viral videos released to watch in November. You have likely seen a few of these already, but hopefully a new video can entertain you below. We kick things off with a brave cat video, enjoy. And if you want to create some new viral video entertainment of your own but don’t have the talent to do it, then head over to Spidvid to collaborate and partner up with the talent you need on your team.

1. Cat vs Alligator

If you have a cute cat, chances are that you know he or she isn’t that brave. This is perhaps the bravest cat you will ever see, usually dogs are too intense for the average cat… but an alligator?!

2. Kobe and Kimmel Play Black Ops

We are used to seeing Kobe Bryant firing long 3-point shots in the NBA, but seeing him launch a rocket is much more fun and destructive.

3. Sesame Street: There’s An App For That

A few years ago Apple came out with their “there’s an app for that” ad campaign, and the messaging is still fresh in our minds to this day. If you like apps, Sesame Street, and music then this video is for you!

4. Angry Birds Peace Treaty

Speaking of apps, are you a big fan of the game Angry Birds like me? When I saw this video I was a bit upset because I wanted to be the first video creator to create a viral Angry Bird video. I have purchased a few Angry Birds plush toys and I will be getting them this month! Be on the lookout for my Angry Birds Spidvid project later this month, subscribe to the projects feed if you haven’t already to collaborate with me on it. It has the potential to be a viral hit and end up on our list for January. For now enjoy the peace treaty deal that the Angry Birds and Angry Pigs (sort of) make.

5. World’s Biggest Harry Potter Fan

My girlfriend has read all of the Harry Potter books and is a massive fan, but she can’t touch this guy. If anyone is a bigger Harry Potter fan please create your video and top this current champion.

Be sure to subscribe to our blog for December’s top viral videos, interesting video production posts along the way, and stay on top of new developments within Spidvid’s community as well. Get the Spidvid blog delivered to your inbox, or via RSS.

Interview With Streamy Award Winner Mark Gantt

October 15th, 2010

Mark Gantt The Bannen Way

I recently had the opportunity to interview Mark Gantt who is the executive producer and lead actor of the web series “The Bannen Way”. The Bannen Way killed it at the Streamy Awards and went on to win four awards, and has attracted over 14 million views. Mark is now passing down his knowledge of the web series business as a teacher through his workshop, so if you’re looking to learn from one of the best be sure to check that out.

Enough of kissing Mark’s ass, below is our interview.

1. Did you create your web series workshop to pass on the information and knowledge you gained from creating and producing “The Bannen Way” to other aspiring video creators and filmmakers?

Yes. I have met over thirty people for coffee to discuss my experience with The Bannen Way and have done over twenty panels in the last five months and realized that with the limited time available, there was little ‘nuts and bolts’ being talked about. One attendee of the NATPE panel I was doing called “Anatomy of a Hit Web Series” was very frustrated afterwards and I overheard her saying, “I still don’t know how to make a $#&@ web series!” I heard that, I heard that from several people. In the workshops, or on a panel, or at coffee, I explain that creating a web series isn’t brain surgery but it feels like that if you don’t have all the tools. You don’t need to be able to do everything, you just need to be able to work very hard, research like crazy, and build a team to help you with your vision.

2. Do you expect any of your students to go out and create a hit web series like you did?

Absolutely. I want them to create something that will empower them as artists, and give them a little extra leg up in the industry. It’s really about giving people a jumping off point. Enough information to get in trouble as I always say.

3. What’s the best book you’re read, or video you’ve watched that inspired you to create entertainment at a high level?

LOL. uh… I’m not really a book guy, everything is from experience. I have just worked on a lot of sets, so if people were doing a project I was there listening and learning… for free.

4. What do you think of web series creators and producers turning to crowdsourcing platforms like KickStarter and IndieGoGo to raise funds for their production projects?

I think it’s a HUGE resource. It’s an interesting model for a couple reasons. I think it allows the investors (ie: mom, dad, uncles, dentists, viewers, etc.) to feel that their money is actually going into a production, and helps force the filmmaker to FIGURE OUT how they are going to make it. It’s a great pressure on you to get things made.

5. What advantages do web series creators have over TV producers?

There are about 30 people that have to approve of you doing a TV series, not including agents, managers, and lawyers. To create and distribute a web series… you can be the boss. We worked with Sony (on The Bannen Way) so it wasn’t just us, but it was a lot easier than working with a studio AND a Network.

6. How is collaboration benefiting the new media production landscape?

Filmmaking by definition is a collaborative art. I love that you get a chance to work with a group of people with different talents to complete a common goal. People want to create. A director of photography wants to shoot, actors want to act and with technology improving, you can now actually shoot for very cheap. So instead of talented people without the money to shoot on film, they can now shoot on the Cannon 7D or rent the RED camera and end up with a great looking project in the end.

What Do You Need to Create Better Entertainment?

September 14th, 2010

My team and I created Spidvid so that video and film entertainment could be created by teams made up of individuals regardless of their location, age, skill level, or experience in the industry. Our vision is to create an open video and film production platform, network, and community. We want individuals from across the planet to join in to help grow Spidvid into the world’s largest video and film creation ecosystem.

Spidvid’s platform and community is moving nicely through public beta, and lots of video creators and filmmakers have already benefited from its use in one way or another. But we want to do more to make every production project as successful as possible.

If you are working on a project right now, or have a future project in the works, we want to help. Whether it’s with funding, connecting you with talent for your team, offering some tips and advice, or promotion and marketing for your web series or short film. Email us, tweet out to us, or post your needs on our Facebook page and let us know how we can offer value to your projects, and content.

Every week we are helping to make video creators and filmmakers dreams come true. There is something very magical about seeing projects successfully getting completed, and then enjoyed and shared by thousands of viewers.

Creating An Entertaining Video Is Only Half the Battle

July 15th, 2010

So you’ve created an entertaining video or short film with your team, and are now ready to tell its story to the world’s viewing audience, fantastic. Many individuals who create video content aren’t the best promoters and marketers of it, so I’ve composed a list of tips for what should be done after a video project is complete.

1. Video metadata – You are likely going to want to upload your video or film to the web for distribution, and possibly monetization also. How many viewers find videos online is by searching for them so a video’s title, description, and tags have to be of quality. The title must grab a viewer’s attention and make him or her go “wtf?” I have to watch this right now! The description is important because lots of information can be written which can turn up in search results. Using lots of broad and narrow tags is good since lots of viewers discover relevant content using this piece of the metadata.

2. Distribution – When you want to deliver your videos online there are many options to choose from. YouTube is the first video sharing site that will come to mind, but competition for viewer attention is pretty intense there. To get mass distribution quickly, many video creators are now turning to TubeMogul which allows for uploading to multiple sites simultaneously. To release video or short film content as a team, you can turn to our platform as a solution for accomplishing that goal.

3. Marketing – Social media is becoming the go to way to promote online videos. You should be constantly growing your profiles on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, within the blogosphere, and especially in the video sharing communities you distribute in. Advertising can be spent to attract more views, and it’s a good thing to experiment, just be sure to pay attention to the campaign analytics and statistics to see if it makes sense to buy similar ads for your next video. Some bloggers who embed video content drive huge view counts for creators, so be sure to connect with bloggers in your niche to see if they are interested in showing the video to their audience.

4. Comments - If someone spends the time to leave a comment on your video you should thank them and respond to them if appropriate. Normally less than 1% of viewers write a comment, so be sure to treasure the ones who do because they are your fans who may talk about you or your video. Word of mouth and word of mouse viewers are the ultimate marketing vehicles for your video content.

If you aren’t into promoting and marketing  your entertaining video content, you may want to partner up with an individual or two who’s talented in this important area. Our community has individuals who can increase your video’s view count, so you can focus on what you do best which is create or produce videos.
