Educational Programs For Video Production

July 27th, 2010

This is a guest post by a remarkable video script writer friend of mine, Jerry. Jerry offers tips for what to look for in a video production school, and tells his own personal story based on his experience.

I went to college for video production, much to the dismay of my family. They were sure I was making a huge mistake, and they let me know that they thought I should reconsider my choice. This went on for months leading up to me going to college, but I didn’t pay their remarks or worries any heed. In the end, I didn’t end up with a job in video production, but I can’t say that I regret my decision. Life tends to take you where it wants you to go not matter what you think. I learned a lot more than video production at college, and these things have become handy in my current career as a writer.

I attended The Art Institute of Pittsburgh, and I learned both audio and video production there. I went at a bad time however, because they revamped the course while I was in the middle of it. It used to be strictly by their itinerary, and I just took the classes they gave me. In the middle of my education there, they switched it to electives, and you could major in audio or video production, and take more specialized classes. Because I was half way done with my education at this point, this did nothing to help me. In fact, I missed out on quite a few classes because of it.

Though my video production dreams didn’t pan out, I’m happy to say a friend of mine now has a great job, and has a great career ahead of her. She works in video production for a company that does a lot of high profile work for large corporations and even a few sports teams. I also have a lot of friends who were successful in concert production jobs, and I have run into a few of them at concerts I have attended in recent years.

If you want to go into video production, do your homework first. Find a bunch of possible schools, and have a good look at what classes they offer. Find out how much hands-on training they offer, and see if they have an internship program. There are quite a few schools for video production, but you don’t want to waste your money on the wrong one. Visit each school before you decide, if you can that is, and ask about graduate success stores and job assistance after graduation.

If you are attending a video production or film college and are looking to start a project, or find a project to collaborate on with others, why not grab a free Spidvid account and get started today.

The Spidvid Android App

July 19th, 2010

It’s our mandate to allow Spidvid community members to use our platform wherever they prefer. For now we have Spidvid.com but are happy to announce that Android app planning is underway. Follow us on Twitter? You should because we originally broke this news a few days ago via a tweet.

The plan is to include all of the features that are now on the site, in the Android app, with the exception of uploading a team created video which may or may not be included. The app will be free to download and use, and our hope is to release it later next month in August or early September.

After the Droid app we will develop either an iPhone app next, or a Facebook app. If you have an app preference let us know on Facebook, Twitter, or email us.

If you have a device which runs the Android platform, we hope you download the soon to be released Spidvid app, and let us know how you like it and how we could improve it for you. The Spidvid mobile revolution is just around the corner.

Google Is Dominating Online Video

July 15th, 2010

Over night, Google became the number one online video player when they purchased YouTube on October 9th, 2006. Since then the gap has been widening between YouTube and other video sharing websites. YouTube now commands about 42% of all online video streams, and that will only grow as their ecosystem further builds itself out over time.

You know about YouTube’s success on the web, and across mobile devices, but their newest and upcoming moves are quite impressive too. Something that I’m extremely interested about is their new 4K video running at a resolution of 4096 x 3072 which is ideal for a 25 foot screen. I never thought I would ever watch a YouTube video on a large screen, and maybe I won’t any time soon unless I can connect with someone who has a killer projector with mega fast broadband access. If you have an ideal YouTube 4K viewing setup do let me know.

I’m also excited about this fall’s release of Google TV that combines cable TV, online video, and the web into one interactive interface. If you think you multi-task now, just wait until Google TV comes to your living room.

Just last month YouTube won its billion dollar copyright infringement case against Viacom which was a massive win for Google, and for online video in general. It seems like YouTube can do no wrong right now, and has all the momentum to drive the entire industry forward. Maybe I’m just an online video geek, but I’m ecstatic to see where things will be in five years from now. I can’t even imagine what ten years from now will look like, but I’m sure we will all look back at 2010 as being the very early days of online video.

If you want to make a larger imprint in online video by creating content which is more entertaining and that features higher production values, then maybe it’s time to think about collaboration. If collaborating with other like-minded individuals will benefit your future video or film projects then be sure to grab a free Spidvid profile, post a project, and start connecting with the talent you need to successfully drive your vision forward.
