Leaving Hollywood, Welcome to Hollyweb

November 26th, 2009

We have taken a big step today in terms of attracting increased attention and awareness for Spidvid by issuing a press release which has been already picked up across the Web.

You can read the story “Leaving Hollywood, Welcome to Hollyweb” from any of these sources: MarketWire, AOL Money, Canadian Business, Sys-Con Media, Alpha Trade Finance, Earth Times, Euro Investor, and PR Inside are a few sites already that have featured our story.

Our goals are to get attention, build awareness for what Spidvid is all about, and to get a couple hundred individuals in the video production space to sign up and become part of our early private beta community.

If you are a video creator, actor, director, writer, story teller, or music artist we invite you to visit our site, click the “Sign Up” link, and provide us with your email address to receive an invite to phase 1 of our private beta roll out.

Creating Video Production Tribes

November 24th, 2009

Companies are entities which connect individuals together so that they can work on projects together, create products, market products, generate revenue and profits, and then repeat that process over and over again until it no longer works then they either change it or vanish from existence. The most important aspect of the corporate model are the employees, everything else involved are just commodities.

The point here is that by providing a framework so that individuals can connect to each other, collaborate together, and align themselves to accomplish similar goals will produce remarkable results that we’re not yet aware of. This can now be done without corporate involvement which is very exciting for some, and very scary for others because it’s a relatively new concept.

Spidvid provides a social framework so that video creators and professionals (like actors, writers, directors, story tellers, music artists, and others) can connect together and produce whatever video content they are passionate about creating regardless of team member location restrictions. The right combination of talent, ideas, passion, execution, and connection will yield video content that would have never existed without having brought individuals together in an open environment to achieve these results. That’s what motivates us to push Spidvid forward because we know what’s possible as members of the world get more connected, collaborative, intelligent, and come to understand what’s possible in this new media space in the years ahead.

We invite you to join our video production community so that you can create your own tribes, and join others which will help you produce quality content that you can’t do alone, or without a large budget.

Spidvid’s platform has been immensely influenced by the Tribes book, with the firm belief that connecting people together so that they can form their own creation entities is the wave of the future.

The video below is a presentation by Seth Godin at the TED conference in February of this year (2009) where he argues that leading and connecting is the key going forward so that we as a human race can further evolve, and challenge the status quo across all industries and marketplaces.

More info on the video

Seth Godin argues the Internet has ended mass marketing and revived a human social unit from the distant past: tribes. Founded on shared ideas and values, tribes give ordinary people the power to lead and make big changes. He urges us to do so.

I hope this video inspires those who watch it to want to be part of something bigger than themselves. If it does then please join our community, and work with us to make the video production process more open, transparent, authentic, collaborative, connected, and fun.

Thinking Big About Collaboration

November 14th, 2009

the think big manifesto

This post in inspired by The Think Big Manifesto by Michael Port.

I have listed some quotes and questions from the book below, which inspires both Spidvid and our community to provide ideal environments to produce quality video content. There are some (Spidvid’s take) comments as well on how these quotes and questions relate to collaborative video production.

- Love is at the foundation of the very best collaborations. Spidvid’s take: any video will be produced better if the team members feel the love for each another.

- True collaboration is a give and take. True partnerships are founded in equality. Equality does not equal sameness. We don’t all bring the same skills or resources to the table, but we all bring something and we all need something. Spidvid’s take: every video project needs a diverse set of individuals to make things happen.

- The paradox: Big thoughts create independence, not dependence. Big thinkers act instead of compete. They discover that in an open, fluid, back and forth collaboration, in the free flow of ideas, when you can intrust yourself to the notion of trust, big thoughts get even bigger. Spidvid’s take: open and authentic collaboration will always yield better results than a closed silo type of approach. Our social platform has been developed using these key concepts.

- Collaboration levels: (1) Competitive interactions, (2) Cooperative transactions, and (3) Collaborative interactions. Spidvid’s take: there is competition for joining limited sized production teams, but healthy competition ensures projects receive the highest quality of talent possible. 2 and 3 are large parts of what our platform stands for.

- How do we find partners and collaborators? The same way you get a date. By believing in yourself and what you’re doing. When you are excited about a project, you will draw others to you. You will receive offers of help. More than you can even accept. Spidvid’s take: if the enthusiasm and confidence in your projects is evident it will motivate others to join your production teams, and the passion will trickle down to each member involved.

- People who play small think they have to do it all themselves. What about you? Are you ready to play bigger by truly collaborating with others? Spidvid’s take: our skills, talents, and outputs are limited when we are the only person working on a project. Working on a well coordinated team ensures that our projects get value which we can’t provide on an individual basis. Long live collaboration.

- Are you the kind of person people want to help? Do you enjoy collaborating with others? What kind of collaborations do you engage in? Can you take your partnerships to the next level? Who do you love?  Spidvid’s take: if you are open to leveraging a collaborative model, can delegate tasks to team members, and trust and believe in what your team is capable of, there should be lots of love when your videos are fully produced.

Statement of Collaboration

- I will be a person others want to work with.

- I will work with others without hidden or selfish intent to accomplish our mutual goals in the service of what each of us stands for.

How to be a Spidvid Professional

November 7th, 2009

We have put together a very quick rough demo of how video production professionals get value out of Spidvid.

Learn how to get an account, bid on production projects, join teams, where uploaded videos go, share credit and compensations with each member, and other various spid-bits.

Important things for professionals to know:

- During our private beta, all video content produced by collaborative teams is uploaded to UnleashVideo. When we roll out our public beta early next year 2010, we fully intend to have a broader distribution network including the likes of YouTube, and other large audience video sharing sites.

- First phase beta invites will be sent out later on this month (November 2009).

- Allocation of compensations for revenue sharing with team members is done by creators, and so is the uploading of all video content. In the future we want to make these processes more collaborative between all key members.

- Video advertising may not occur until we reach public beta, so don’t expect to earn and share cash right away with your team members.

- Suggestions for new features is very much welcomed. Just contact us with your ideas and feedback, and we will include them in our public beta.

We are very excited about working closely with the first few hundred members of our beta community. There’s a long journey to travel before we fully produce the new media ecosystem we envision, but look forward to all of the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
